asianews.it

the institute is near ochheuteal beach and hosts 50 students who are orphaned or very poor. it will have 19 rooms to let to tourists as a means of meeting the school’s running costs.

phnom penh (asianews) – the king of cambodia, norodom sihmoni, has inaugurated a hotel school animated by the salesians in sihanoukville. for the king, it was an opportunity to go for the first time to the city, a flourishing tourist centre, which bears his father’s name.

according to eglises d’asie, fr robert panetto, who runs the hotel school, told the king that the institution has 50 students who are either orphans or who come from poor families. they join over 300 students of the don bosco technical school who study mechanics, electrical engineering, administration and tourism.

king sihamoni told the boys to “work hard” and to “observe the principles of the school and respect the teachers, so they will get a formation that will be contribute to the development of the country.”

the hotel school is situated 2km away from the renowned ochheuteal beach and has 19 rooms that will be let to tourists for 30/35 dollars per night. fr panetto said this will be a way to support, at least partly, the costs of running the school, seeing that the students are not fee paying.

Japan donates 1.7 mln USD food aid to Cambodia

march 01, 2007

the japanese government has decided to donate 210 million yen (about 1.7 million u.s. dollars) food aid to cambodia through the world food program (wfp), a press release said on wednesday.

the food aid will be allocated to cambodia for vulnerable groups, such as hiv/aids patients, tuberculosis patients, primary school children and those who are suffering from chronic food shortage caused by poverty, the press release from the japanese embassy to cambodia said.

the japanese government has decided to extend food aid totaling 2,520 million yen (about 20.4 million u.s. dollars) through the wfp to support chronically food-insecure people in 13 countries, including the kingdom of cambodia, the press release said.

notes to this effect were exchanged in rome on feb. 27 between mr. yuji nakamura, ambassador of japan to italy and mr. jean- jacques graisse, senior deputy executive director of the wfp, it added.

japan has been one of wfp's largest donors since 1992, it said, adding that the wfp cambodia office has received about 91 million u.s. dollars from japan.

S'ville Likely To Face Major Water Shortage

thursday, february 22, 2007

sihanoukville will face a shortage of drinking water in march or april if adequate rains do not come to fill the municipality's boeng prek tub reservoir, an official warned wednesday.

first deputy shanoukville governor sbong sarath said the reservoir's water level is already low due to higher levels of consumption, in addition to regular dry season evaporation.

sihanoukville will require unusual, out-of-season rainfall to avoid the shortage that is expected to occur between late march and early april, sbong sarath said, adding that the shortage could affect 70,000 residents of mittapheap district.

"there won't be a complete shortage, but people will have to buy water from private sellers who have wells," he said.

sbong sarath attributed the rising demand for water to the new residents and businesses that have flocked to sihanoukville, where there are now nearly 2,000 hotel rooms as well as factories and other businesses.

one reservoir for rainwater and three large wells supply water to mittapheap.

to meet the municipality's needs, anco brothers company ltd has plans to build a water supply plant and reservoir later this year, a company official said.

anco brothers is conducting a feasibility study into using the kbal chhay waterfall as a site for the plant, and is in negotiations with the government about its construction, said lang hor, assistant to company chairman phu kok an.

he added that the company plans to invest $7 to $8 million to build the water-supply plant expected to produce 30,000 cubic meters of water, and install 17 to 20 kilometers of pipes.

"we see that sihanoukville needs adequate water, so we plan to help," lang hor said. "there is growing economic activity there so water consumption is also rising."

he added that, within five to 10 years, the company anticipates increasing the water supply of the kbal chhay plant to 50,000 or 60,000 cubic meters.
